Rotary
Rotary, International is a global network of community leaders and volunteers who work together to create lasting change — in their communities and around the world. Founded in 1905, Rotary today connects more than 1.2 million members through more than 45,000 Rotary and Rotaract clubs (college-age clubs) worldwide. Rotary members put “Service Above Self” into action through local and international projects addressing important challenges such as education, health, clean water, economic opportunity, peace, and the environment. Rotary is perhaps best known as leading the 40+ year effort to eradicate polio.
Developing young leaders and promoting international understanding have long been important parts of Rotary's work. Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) brings those values together by giving young people the opportunity to experience another culture, build lifelong relationships, grow into global citizens, develop leadership skills, and become ambassadors for peace. Rotary has seven Areas of Focus:
- Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention
- Disease Prevention and Treatment
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
- Maternal and Child Health
- Basic Education and Literacy
- Community Economic Development
- Protecting the Environment
Rotary Youth Exchange is about much more than just travel. Living in another country, learning another culture, and becoming part of another family helps young people see the world from different perspectives. Those personal connections build understanding across cultures — one student, one family, and one community at a time.
