Rotary Youth Exchange
Embrace New Experiences
About
Long Term Exchange is an incredible, transformative opportunity to live in another country for a full school year (10–11 months). You’ll go to high school, stay with 2–3 host families, immerse in a new culture, learn a new language, make friends from around the world, and serve as a peace ambassador for your home country.

Who Can Apply
Students age15½ to 18 years old. You must be in high school or recently graduated, have strong grades, be open-minded, willing to learn, and ready for adventure. You must be sponsored by your local Rotary Club.
Quick Highlights
- Year 1 (Prep & Apply): Applications open September 1st. Candidates attend local interviews in October/November, district interviews in Grants Pass in December (where country matches are decided), and training sessions through spring and early summer prior to your departure.
- Year 2 (The Exchange): All OUTBOUND students leave between July and early September for their host countries, live abroad for the school year, and head home the following June/July.
- Year 3 (Mentorship): Returning home! You're now called a ROTEX and returned students help to prep and mentor the next group of outbound exchange students!
- Safety First: Host families go through an official background check and approval process, backed by Rotary Youth Protection policies.
- Custom Matching: You can express your top destination preferences, and Rotary works to find the best match for your personality and interests.

Ready for the Best Summer of Your Life?
The Rotary Short-Term Exchange Program (STEP) is a summer travel swap program for teens aged 15 to 18 1/2. During summer, you get to travel abroad, make a new best friend, and explore a whole new culture! You are a youth ambassador representing District 5110 and your home country, so you'll be expected to follow all Rotary rules and share your experience with Rotary clubs!
How It Works
- The 1-on-1 Swap: You get matched with a student your age and same gender from another country.
- First Half (3–6 Weeks): Your partner stays with you and your family in the U.S. You and your family act as local tour guides, showing them around and sharing your everyday life.
- Second Half (3–6 Weeks): You both fly together to their home country, where you stay with their family and explore their world!
- Total Time: 6 to 12 weeks of combined travel and host fun over the summer.

Quick Highlights
- No School Involved: This isn't an academic study program—it's purely about travel, sight-seeing, cultural exchange, and having fun during summer break.
- Safety First: Host families go through an official background check and approval process, backed by Rotary Youth Protection policies.
- Custom Matching: You can express your top destination preferences, and Rotary works to find the best match for your personality and interests.
